Top: The Calabrian architect Mario Occhiuto plans the SHANGHAI WORLD EXPO 2010
Mario Occhiuto (Official Site) protagonist of the continuous Italian excellence to achieve successes in China. Now  é the time of the SHANGHAI WORLD EXPO 2010 with his project CinaOggi the Calabrian architect in fact has won the competition for the design and the environmental recovery of ex-industrial pavilions inside the BEST URBAN PRACTICES AREA (UBPA) of the Universal Exhibition held to Shanghai, in China, in 2010.
The international competition announced by Shanghai World Expo Land Holding company Co. Ltd has awarded a prize to the work of Watchful one, that itself  é concentrate on the theme of the recovery of the ex-industrial buildings in technological key and compatible-echo, to transform them into new expositive pavilions.
With the motto “Better City, Better Life”, there are waited to World Expo of Shanghai 70 million persons, who from May 1 until October 31 2010, will be able to visit further 166 national pavilions arranged on an area of 5,28 square kilometres, and interfacciarsi with 200 countries exhibitors.
Mario Occhiuto already present in China with important projects, elaborated, for the competition, an intervention of recovery and qualification of the industrial pavilions strongly innovative and particularly appreciated, helping to export a typically Italian know-how in a country that till now a little itself  é worried of the theme of the recovery.
The existing buildings kept in their structure and it forms, they will be dealt by a metal garment that will cover them and that will be transformed , as required, into illuminating body, screening or I support for projections; this second skin, rustproof, stained and multifunctional, it will serve besides to improve the thermic performances of the covering. The existing carroponti will be forgiven in function to facilitate the transport of light cloths of separation, purposely thought, for the flexible subdivision of the expositive halls.
The attached building, instead, é planned ex-novo and there will supply the services with welcome for all the air one of the UBPA, extended on 15,12 hectares. Putting itself as a continuation of the square in front of, another key element of the Italian originality, it will let , through several runs internal and created externally with great flights of steps that get into covering, of entering the pavilions expositive through a hanging footbridge. This last one, slipping between the net and the original walls, creates a run to enjoyable mitigated climate in each season.
The supportability  é guaranteed a series of project beginnings which the respect of the architectural identity, the integration with the context, the functional flexibility and the accessibility . Not less important the solutions of energy saving, like the predisposition of photovoltaic light cloths on the strata of the roof exposed in South and glazed cuts on those to North, to improve the diffusion of the light to the interior, the covered curtains drawn by the bridge crane and the same run to mitigated climate.
The jury of the competition itself  é expressed in favour of the Watchful Architect, in consequence of a selection that has favoured the respect of the local identity, nevertheless presenting innovative solutions is from the architectural point of view which technician and the meticulous work of insertion of the project in the masterplan of the whole EXPO. Once more, style, quality and knowledge Italians make themselves road in the “Country of the Centre”.
